Rigorous, Relevant Research
Established in 2009 at the University of Southern California through a generous gift from Leonard and Pamela Schaeffer, the Schaeffer Center develops rigorously researched solutions, with a focus on fostering better pharmaceutical policy and regulation, improving the functioning of healthcare markets, increasing value in healthcare delivery and, ultimately, improving health. With an unparalleled data-resource infrastructure and collaborations spanning the globe, the Center serves as a hub for health economics research and a training ground for new generations of experts.

Xavier Becerra, then California’s Attorney General, speaks at a Schaeffer Center event on universal coverage.
Improving our healthcare system requires creative approaches, robust research and interdisciplinary expertise–areas in which the Schaeffer Center excels. Our research helps drive the agenda in Washington, D.C., and at the state and local level. Senior officials from both sides of the aisle–including presidents, key agency leaders and lawmakers–turn to our center for innovative, nonpartisan solutions to inform their decision-making. Our scholars regularly meet with policymakers and their staffs and provide expert testimony to congressional committees and working groups.
The Schaeffer Center is renowned as one of the world’s leading health policy research institutions and consistently ranks among the top five in academic citations. It has been awarded 112 federally funded projects and hosts four NIH-funded centers.
