Overview
Progressive Medical Research (PMR) hosted a community paper-shredding event that generated over 50 candidate pre-screens in a single afternoon, revealing an unexpected recruitment channel with zero paid advertising. The “value exchange” (free shredding) drove engagement. The approach can be replicated with electronics recycling and similar community events.
Methods
- Hosted a community event in a parking lot that offered free paper shredding while recruiting participants for research studies with PMR, a clinical research organization
- A pre-screening table staffed with trained team members introduced research study opportunities as people waited to shred documents
- Leveraged the “value exchange” model — providing a free, high-demand service to attract a captive, appreciative audience in the demographic required for most research studies (ages 50 and older)
- Utilized no paid advertising; relied solely on word-of-mouth, on-site signage, social media and partner promotion
Metrics
- 87 people attended the shredding event
- 62 attendees were prescreened for Alzheimer’s prevention or for a potential Alzheimer’s study
- The remaining attendees did not qualify for anything at that time but were added to PMR’s internal database for possible studies in the future.
Key Lessons
- Community service events create a low-barrier, high-trust environment more conducive to pre-screening conversations than traditional recruitment methods
- The “value exchange” concept is a powerful motivator — when participants receive something of tangible value, they are far more receptive and open to engagement
- Wait time is an asset; it provides an opportunity for brief, meaningful conversations
- Zero advertising cost does not mean zero reach — community-driven events can generate substantial and unexpected recruitment volume
- This model is highly scalable and replicable across similar community events such as electronics recycling drives, free health screenings, food drives, and seasonal giveaways
