Background
The BASIC-Cognitive study in Nueces Couty, Texas, sought to estimate the prevalence and trajectories of cognitive impairment or dementia among older Mexican Americans and non-Hispanic whites, as well as assess community needs. Researchers recruited adults aged 65 and older and informal caregivers through door-to-door outreach to randomly selected households.
Findings
Researchers identified 1,320 age-eligible individuals, including 689 Mexican American adults, 60% of whom completed cognitive screening. The study’s door-to-door case ascertainment strategy resulted in robust participation among eligible Mexican American adults.
