Biography
During a career spanning more than five decades in Washington, Chip Kahn has earned a reputation as one of the nation’s most influential and knowledgeable health policy leaders. From 2001 through 2025, he served as President and CEO of the Federation of American Hospitals, the national advocacy organization for tax-paying hospitals. Earlier, he was President and CEO of the Health Insurance Association of America, following a prior tenure as Executive Vice President—giving him deep experience across both the insurance and hospital sectors.
Chip also had a long and distinguished career as a professional staffer in the U.S. Congress, specializing in health care financing and delivery policy. He served in both the House and Senate and from 1995 to 1998 was Staff Director for the Health Subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee, where he played a key role in shaping major health legislation.
Chip is a founding member and Co-Chair of the Future of Health, which brings together senior leaders from leading health organizations around the world. He was also a co-founder of the Hospital Quality Alliance and for many years served as Co-Chair of the National Quality Forum’s Measure Applications Partnership Coordinating Committee.
He is the only health care leader to have appeared on Modern Healthcare’s annual “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” list every year since its inception and was honored with the B’nai B’rith National Health Care Award in 2016. Chip frequently writes on health policy and performance measurement in publications such as Health Affairs.
Chip earned a BA from Johns Hopkins University and an MPH from Tulane University and has taught health policy at Johns Hopkins University, Tulane University, and George Washington University.
